Trevor Reichman of TreeMusic (Terlingua, TX), Darren Jesse of Hotel Lights (Brooklyn, NY), and Sam Watts of Ghosts I’ve Met (Marfa, TX) each played a set at the Starlight in Terlingua, Texas. Most people leave Terlingua in May and June as temperatures average at 110 degrees, but Starlight was certainly well attended for this Saturday evening’s performance.

The Starlight never disappoints with great food (especially when Diego is in the kitchen), quality music, nice people, and a wonderful atmosphere. And seriously, try the margaritas and boar sausage.

Trevor, Sam, and Darren played a wonderful show filled with folk songs about nature, politics, love, and life.

Chinati Hot Springs

Chinati Mountains

The Chinati Hot Springs consist of three hot springs, one warm spring, a cold spring and quite possibly paradise nestled in a mountain. There are two ways to arrive at the Chinati Hot Springs from Marfa. One route is 2810 or Pinto Canyon road; this road is most scenic

Sulfur Bath

but recommended for trucks, and high clearance vehicles, the rocks are not afraid to flatten tires. Another way to get to the springs is by taking 67 towards Presidio and turning right onto 170, once past Ruidosa a sign appears for the hot springs. This trip is also very scenic and includes mountain features that look like Abe Lincoln and an Elephant. Thunder Front

The springs boast hot springs infused with lithium, sulfur and other minerals. The very cold spring is set above the grounds in an infinity like pool. Lodging includes quaint, rustic cabins. The best part of visiting the hot springs in the summer months is that visitors are sparse and the desert climate allows for soaking in the hot springs during the cooler nights

and the cold spring during the very hot days. Some believe the springs to have healing power. Be sure to allow adamant soaking time.

There is a community kitchen with everything one would need so bring food to cook, grill, or eat

cold. Also plenty of board games if a brake is needed from soaking or hiking.

Always two or three sweet dogs roaming around and enjoying the springs as well, very pet friendly.

The images speak for themselves, loose yourself in the springs.

El Cosmico

El Cosmico Bar

El Cosmico is a concept hotel that includes beautifully refurbished airstream trailors, yurts, and storage containers turned living spaces. Risiding on a feild at the edge of town has not divorced the community from this project. Dutch, wood burning hot tubs, open air bar, showers and hammocks make this space ideal for Marfa. El Cosmico has been open in spurts as more and more work gets done under Jack Sanders team of Design Build Adventure men and women. Friday night campfires, hot tub soaks, and Lone Star is always enjoyable. Sunday afternoon BBQ’s, horshoe toss, frisbee, and baseball bring everyone out to play. It shouldn’t be too much longer until this project is up and running and a permenant staple in the Marfa community.

Track it’s progress at http://www.elcosmico.com in their blog section.

Vive Terlingua!

Terlingua

Nothing better than spending the evening in Terlingua after a day at Big Bend National Park. Monday nights burgers are 2 for 1 at the Starlight where almost always one can hear wonderful live music. There are four stops on the bar tour of Terlingua, but this trip only allotted three…

The Starlight – located in Terlingua Ghost Town the exposed adobe and old western decor feels right at home. Musicians play to a dining room and beautiful bar. The talent is local or national and always enjoyable. Drink to get, Margarita.

The Boathouse – great open air bar across the road from the Ghost Town with a boathouse theme complete with a sand volleyball court, mini pizzas and frosty plastic mugs. Drink to get, Lone Star.

La Kiva – an “underground” bar, or cave bar whichever you choose. Appropriately decorated with animal skeletons embedded in the walls, considerable tables made from sections of trees (great for playing bananagrams). The outdoor area boasts a stage and plenty of seating. Drink to get, anything

Another favorite is Sunday Brunch at La Posado Milagro, yummy quiches and breakfast foods, coffee, and music.

Laura Gibson and Trevor of TreeMusic Play Marfa

Marfa Show

Laura Gibson is currently on tour with Damien Jurando but has broken away for an evening to come to Marfa to play with area musician Trevor Reichman of TreeMusic. Laura lives in Portland, Oregon and lays down chords as impressively blue and complex as her voice.

Trevor resides in Terlingua and will set the stage for Laura tonight at the Marfa Book Co. at 7:30. His lyrics are substantial and so are his tunes, which compliment a more rythmic melody. Think head-bopping economic crisis jingle.

The only thing matched by the talent of these two musicians is the beautiful start-of-summer evening in which they are playing.
